Most Dutch Coffeeshops Admit Tourists
May 23, 2013Two-thirds of Holland's 478 cannabis coffeeshops continue to admit tourists, despite new national laws starting January 1st of this year that were supposed to keep out tourists.
In the southern provinces of Holland where only 8% of coffeeshops allow tourists, street dealing has increased since the new laws came into effect.
Eberhard van der Laan, the mayor of Amsterdam, has said from the beginning that his city will continue to serve anyone over 18 years of age in the city's 220 coffeeshops, including tourists.
After much opposition to the new cannabis legislation, a late change to the law allows for local jurisdictions to decide for themselves who is allowed into the area's cannabis coffeeshops.
