First Ever 'Ganjamaica Cup'
December 15, 2016The first so-called 'Ganjamaica Cup' is in the history books, having taken place on December 9-11, 2016, as part of the 'Rastafari Rootzfest' festival in Jamaica.
This was actually the second cannabis cup-like event in Jamaica.
The first Cup took place in November 2015, with cannabis having been made legal in Jamaica only a few months earlier that same year.
High Times co-hosted the inaugural 2015 Cannabis Cup in Jamaica along with a local group, in order to stage the event.
Public consumption events are only legal for sanctioned religious groups. Therefore High Times needed to hook up with such a partner.
However shortly after the completion of the 2015 Jamaica Cannabis Cup - which High Times billed as their replacement for the iconic Amsterdam Cannabis Cup - the Jamaican partners decided to sever ties with High Times and run future Cups independently.
Even though the 2016 Cup was run locally, Americans still had a helping hand.
Oaksterdam University, based in Oakland California, was described as having an integral role in staging the Cup.
Other partners were also involved in making the 2016 Cup happen.
The Jamaica Tourist Board was even a partner with the Cup organizers - Rastafari in Inity.
The three-day 2016 Ganjamaica Cup took place in Negril Jamaica, at Long Bay Beach Park.
