Tourism in Medellin Colombia
Once infamous for the notorious drug gangs and drug activity, today Medellin has been washed off the bad omen and is now reborn. Today, it's one of Colombia's tourist hotspots thanks to its rich culture.
For starters, Medellin sits atop of Aburra Valley making it a magnificent setting for activities such as horseback riding, hiking, and zip lining. Medellin has a lush jungle that you can walk through and make your way to Piedra de Penol.
Plaza Botero and Antioquia Museum: Fernando Botero is a famed Medellin citizen who donated 23 larger than life sculptures composed of overstuffed animals, rotund Roman legionaries and other prominent figures that litter all of downtown Medellin.
The sculptures are the most captivating and photographed work of arts in all of Colombia.
MAMM: (The Medellin Museum of Modern Art): The most dominant feature of the upcoming Ciudad del Rio neighbourhood. Another Medellin part that has changed from being an industrial region to top-tier dining modern area.
The former industrial park is now home to sculpture-filled gardens and artists' lofts. The museum is home to some of the best Colombia's contemporary art. Visitors are asked to start from the top floors and walk down the five floors as you soak in the beautiful art pieces.
Guatape: Elpenon de Guatape that lies 90 kilometers from the town center is a sight to behold. A solid rock formation that soars 200 meters above ground. Get to the top by climbing the 750 concrete steps and get a 360 degree view of the human-made Guatape Reservoir.
A lake that has plenty of tentacles that line up with vacation hotels and homes. Atop the viewing platform, there are lots of drink vendors and shaded tables that you can take rest in before you alight the 750 steps.
Medellin is also known for it's creative solutions to public transportation. In 2013, Medellin beat out Tel Aviv and New York City to win the Wall Street Journal's "Innovative City of the Year" award.
